You may think you don’t have data but it is everywhere and you probably have systems in place capturing it.
Do you have a payment system?
Transactions and receipts are data.
List of Customers or Clients or Donors in a spreadsheet or database?
The list is data.
Inventory or product information?
That’s data too.
Website traffic or social media stats?
Yup, all data.
The rule of thumb is: if it is tracked, it is data.
2. Find a way to access it 🔎
Data is worthless if you can’t get to it.
Whether you are able to see it in the system that captures it (transaction system or web-site traffic manager) or export to a spreadsheet-type tool (e.g. Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers), ensure you can get your hands on it.
3. Digesting a lot of data 🍴
Don’t try to swallow the ocean.
Instead of looking at everything and trying to understand what all of it says, first think about a problem you have and then find the data you think supports it.
4. Make it Visual 📊📈
If it doesn’t make sense just by looking at the numbers in your spreadsheet tool put it into a graph.
BONUS: Displaying something over time can be really powerful!
5. Track KPI’s 🎯
Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) can help you track your goals.
If you don’t already have a goal, pick one. Then find 2-3 data points from your business which will help you know when you’ve achieved it.

BONUS: Setting up a visual of these data-points will not only make it easier to track but will increase motivation 💪
Remember as you’re looking through data: just because some things happen at the same time, doesn’t mean they are related.
Ex. Receipts print for every transaction. Pre-sales receipt printing won’t sell more widgets though!
